In order to create an equitable testing environment and to save an incredible amount of paper, we will use the Lockdown Browser to enable electronic testing.
Please note that we will NOT be using Lockdown “Monitor” (which utilizes your webcam and other monitoring sensors). We will simply be using the Lockdown browser which prevents you from using other applications on your computer while taking the exam.
Additionally, you will need Lockdown Browser for the assessments in the course. Please do this now so that we don’t run into any problems later. Note, the LDB gets updated periodically so it's important that before each Quiz you try out the "LDB" version of the Practice Quiz for that Quiz.. This makes sure that your LDB app is updated and that you don’t have to wait around for it to update before taking your Quiz.
- You will need to download Lockdown Browser to your computer or device. Note, if you have trouble downloading from this page, you go to our Canvas page and then go to the FILES menu and download the EXE (for windows) or ZIP (for Mac) file to install it.
- Chromebook Users: To install the LDB on a Chromebook, just open up Canvas, navigate to the Quiz that requires LDB and you’ll be presented a link to download an install the LDB as a Chrome Extension. You’ll be redirected to the Chrome web store, select
Add to Chrome
to install the LDB. More details here.

All this program does is prevent you from using other applications on your computer as the same time you’re taking the assessment. If you’d like to review their Privacy Policy to see which data it has access to please visit their Privacy page. If you feel uncomfortable installing this application, please see the Instructor.
LDB Crashes when the Duo “Security Key” Screen Appears
The LDB disables access to a variety of features of your computer including the fingerprint sensor which means that if you normally use TouchID (or the Windows equivalent) to login to NU sites (e.g. Canvas, NUPrint, etc.), that won’t work for the LDB. To fix this, you need to add an alternate method of Multi-factor authentication to your account. To do this, follow the below steps:
Step 1. Open up a web browser and open a new Private Browsing
window (how to for Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox).
Step 2. Navigate to any NU site like Canvas or CAESAR.
Step 3. Log-in normally but stop when you see the screen below (the initial Duo MFA Prompt).
Step 4. From that screen, click Other options
and you should see the below:
Step 5. Select the Manage devices
option and now choose one of the available options to verify you are who you say you are:
Step 6. Now you should be at the Manage devices
screen. Here you need to ADD a device that is NOT a security key / iCloud Keychain / TouchID (If that's already the case, and you see a screen similar to the below where you already have a phone attached to your account, skip to the next section). Select the option Add a device
and use it to add your phone (or tablet) via Duo app notifications. Once you’ve successfully verified this new device, the next time you login to the LDB, it should try and fail to verify you via TouchID and then default to the Push Notification method.
If that still doesn’t work
The only option left is to REMOVE your TouchID / Security Key / iCloud Keychain (you can add it back after you’ve finished our course). Follow steps 1 to 4 again but this time, click on the pencil
(Edit
) icon near the option that looks like the above (green box) and click delete
. DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE ALREADY ADDED A DEVICE like described in Step 6.
